Can You Make a Living from Crocheting?Â
The Beginning of a Real Experiment
Introduction
The question keeps coming up in almost every crocheting group: can you make a living from crocheting? The general opinion is often discouraging: the hourly wage is too low, the work is undervalued, and people are unwilling to pay the real price for handmade crafts. But what if there’s hope? In this series, I will document my journey in a real experiment where I’ll try to cover my two children’s private school tuition by crocheting. To achieve this, I need to collect 320,000 forints every month. Follow me on this journey, and let’s explore the possibilities together!
General Opinion: Is it Worth Crocheting for Sale?
The general conclusion is that it’s not worth it. Many people advise that if you love crocheting, you should give your work as gifts or donate it. There are too many obstacles and too little financial reward. However, many still try to make it work in this field. Can you achieve anything contrary to popular belief?
My Own Experiences: Failures and New Beginnings
I tried selling my products in a store twice, and both times I was disappointed. The first time, with little experience, I gave my Christmas products to a baby store for sale. Unfortunately, my entire Christmas collection “disappeared” without any financial return. The second time, learning from my experiences, I rented a shelf in another store. Despite replenishing my stock for Easter, I couldn’t cover the cost of renting the shelf until June, and then the store closed and these items also “disappeared.” It’s difficult to get over these setbacks, but now I’ll try to sell my products on my own platforms, under my own control, so I can be cheated less often.
Financial Analysis: How Much Can You Make from Crocheting?
Every month, I’ll report in detail on costs and profits to get a realistic picture of how much profit can be made from crocheting. I’ll clearly show with data whether the target of 320,000 Forints (880$) per month is achievable. Unfortunately, we live in a small country where the market is rather small. Although I will enter some sales sites here, I will mainly look for English platforms.
Personal Reasons and the Big Goal: Why Do I Crochet?
Life has given me three very talented children who need differentiated education. Unfortunately, public schools did not offer talent care for them, so we moved and enrolled them in a private school where they can progress individually. Both my partner and I have university degrees, but that’s not enough in this challenging period. Crocheting is not only a passion but now also a necessity.
Rewards: What Awaits My Followers?
In addition to documenting every path I try and giving my honest opinion, I think I’ll help those who are hesitant to get started. If we reach the set goal, every follower will get a small gift. This will surely not apply in the first few months 😊.
